Episode 1: Sometimes the Cool Girls Get Laid Off From Our “Dream Jobs”

Introduction

Thinking about that date that went wrong, or if it’s time to ask for a raise? Maybe you can’t stop thinking about that TV show you’re binge-watching, or you might be thinking about your fertility journey. Do you even want kids in this economy?

Let’s put a pin in that.

Life can feel like a never-ending cycle of choices that society can be very hypocritical about. Lucky for you, I’m throwing my hat in the ring because you can never have too many friends who are supportive, hold you accountable, and are unhinged in the best possible way.

Consider this your new favorite space to show up as yourself in a way society doesn’t always make space for. I’m your host, Jasmine Jenai, and this is the Your 9-to-Bloom Bestie podcast. Come on friend, we have a lot to talk about.

Today’s episode is inspired by Laura Brown and Kristina O’Neill’s career book, All the Cool Girls Get Fired. Published in 2025, it not only gives an inside look at Brown and O’Neill’s layoffs at the height of their respective editorial careers, but it also features how to navigate finances, healthcare, legal things and more in the wake of unexpected unemployment. This episode also mentions pregnancy loss, so please listen with care

Hey friend, welcome to the Your 9-to-Bloom Bestie podcast where we’re talking about all things career, love, wellness and more. Like I said in my intro, I’m your host Jasmine Jenai, and I’m so excited to have you listening to the podcast. Fun fact, I tried to get into podcasting last year, but I started getting burnt out because life was still doing its big one. I mean, it still is, but my perspective and approach to things have changed. Come on growth and maturity, we love to see it, right?

On another note, it’s hot outside, as in, this cannot be the same heat we used to experience as kids, absolutely not. For the first time in my adult life, I fully understand why my mom used to tell me I would smell like outside when I would come in from playing all day. Listen, in the words of Dominique Morgan, “My God today!”

One of the ways I’m keeping cool at work is having a mini fan on my desk, blasting in my face all day. I work with older people, so they’re literally playing ping pong with the air conditioning all day, all week, Monday through Friday, and I don’t have time for it.I have my mini fan and I bring an extra pack of deodorant with me because you never know. Sometimes you need a midday pick-me-up. Okay, we’re not going to pretend like we don’t need to check on our hygiene through the day, especially during summer.

Speaking of work, I shared my own version of me preparing for a Netflix documentary that’s work related, and it caught a few people’s attention. I mean, I’ve mentioned my layoff before, but I actually named what happened before I got laid off. And a few people were like, “Huh, what are you talking about?” And it tickled me, not because it’s ‘ha, ha funny,’ but because I haven’t publicly talked about the medical emergency I experienced [in detail], nor have I talked about my thought process when I was going through the aftermath of my medical emergency. So, we’re going to get into that.

Let’s jump in. You know why?

It’s because the cool girls and bad bitches get laid off sometimes.
