Jenai’s Book Club Pick for July is a Sultry Summer Read with Nostalgic Roots
Another month has passed which means Jenai’s Book Club is back with a fresh summer TBR pick. I’d already chosen it as July’s selection when I discovered news about it, so I’m glad I can finally talk about all things The Best Man: Unfinished Business.
Book Synopsis
As a refresher, The Best Man: Unfinished Business continues after the events of the miniseries The Best Man: The Final Chapters (streaming on Hulu). Fans watched as Harper’s career flourished while his marriage to Robyn dwindled to nothing, but they also saw Quentin and Shelby (former strong frenemies) develop a healthy romantic relationship and even saw Lance heal from the tragic loss of his wife Mia. He even opened himself up to a second chance at love with the gorgeous Jasmine whom he met during Quentin’s wedding weekend.
But, we can’t forget about Murch and Candace. We saw them struggle to come to terms with how they saw themselves compared to how they felt the world boxed them into singular roles. They learned and embraced their complexities with Murch learning how to stop holding in his emotions. Also Candace received a doctorate degree in plant medicine and paved the way for victims of sexual harassment to become vindicated after experiencing an unfortunate situation.
Ah, and how can we forget the ambitious Jordan? She climbed the ranks of the corporate ladder in the media industry and found that she wanted to go in a different direction after getting what she thought she wanted. However, she’s still not being completely honest about what she wants and what she thinks she deserves.
And Robyn? Harper’s ex-wife? She decided to put herself first and decided America would no longer be home for her. Despite Harper’s wishes, she decides to move to Ghana with their daughter Mia (named after Lance’s late wife) to start a life of her own.
The Best Man: Unfinished Business Book Event
Crystal Renee Hayslett and Malcolm D. Lee
I also couldn’t pass up the chance to attend filmmaker Malcolm D. Lee’s book event in Atlanta! Although imposter syndrome tried to convince me to go home after work, I swallowed my anxiety and made the 20 minute trip to the event. Though it shouldn’t have come as a surprise, I had a great time being among other fans of The Best Man franchise, and loved the dialogue between Lee and Crystal Renee Hayslett (Actress from Tyler Perry’s Sistas and Zatima on BET+, and Podcast Host of Keep it Positive, Sweetie).
There were insightful moments mixed with feel-good laughter and even an exclusive reading of The Best Man: Unfinished Business to give fans a taste of what to expect. Despite beyond beyond 10 chapters in, there’s nothing like hearing an author speak their written words aloud.
As I looked around the room, everyone seemed to be hanging on to Lee and Hayslett’s every word with bated breath. I mean, you could feel the anticipating in the air!
