Using Style & Red Lipstick as Mood Boosters
Some days the “Sunday scaries” or the “Monday Blues” seem to persist all week. Whether it’s actually work-related or not, there’s no shaking that heavy feeling of dread that doesn’t seem to leave even after you’ve prayed or meditated. Talk about a bummer, right?
More often than not, I’ve been battling those feelings lately and it’s been frustrating to say the least. But, I’m rediscovering a simple thing that gives me a mood boost whenever I need it; tapping into my personal style. Yeah, I’m very serious.
How I Prep Myself to Face a Daunting Day
An outfit isn’t going to cure what’s wrong and it’s not meant to. What it can do, however, is put an extra pep in my step. Before I step into something I’ve put together, I take five deep breaths and ease into my makeup routine. I’m usually silently or quietly saying affirmations to myself to help me feel confident about my day, so it’s crucial for me not to skip that.
Once I style my hair, I may reach for a red lipstick as a little bit of armor to go with whatever outfit I have planned. Usually I wear my version of a “nude lip,” but it doesn’t have the same effect as red lipstick. A bold lip is my way of committing to getting ready to face a new day despite any trepidation I may have felt when I first woke up.
The Outfit Choice
Since it’s not 100% fall weather yet (please hurry it up, girl), I opted for lightweight pieces. From this H&M overcoat I scored for $15 a few years ago to my favorite breathable trousers, it’s an outfit I feel comfortable, yet stylish in. That’s become my mantra when getting dressed these days because I want things to feel effortless. I’m trying to embody the soft girl life, okay?
And since my outfit’s color pattern is neutral, my red lipstick doesn’t feel out of place to me. Even though I haven’t been wearing makeup to work like I usually do, it feels nice to fully embrace it when I do. Plus, I like to think red lipstick gives me superpowers. It’s the equivalent of striking the Wonder Woman pose in the mirror, but with my lips leading the way accompanied by a simple, mood-boosting outfit.
